Washoe County School District Elementary School Prototype

Washoe County School District Elementary School Prototype

The challenge put to us by the Washoe County School District: Design a prototype school that looks great, enhances learning, respects the environment, and that can be configured in different ways depending on where it’s located. Over a number of months, we came up with a design consisting of four modular masonry and steel elements: a classroom wing, an administrative wing, a multi-purpose wing, and a media center. In designing it, we anticipated ways to open the building to natural day-lighting to reduce energy use and increase the comfort of the spaces. We also incorporated ground-source heat pump systems and durable, low-maintenance finishes to create schools that are energy-efficient, sustainable, and that will give young people an inspiring place to learn and grow for generations to come.
